To mark the award of the 2014 International René Carcan Prize for Printmaking, the Espace René Carcan is presenting the work of the three prizewinners, as well as works by the other 22 shortlisted artists. These contemporary engravings can be seen to dialogue with works of René Carcan himself, which will also be exhibited.
The Espace René Carcan has as its mission to promote the artistic heritage of the Belgian engraver and watercolour artist, as well as the art of engraving in general. It was on the 20th anniversary of the artist’s death that the association launched the prestigious International Prize for Printmaking – a first for Belgium! The project was brought to fruition by creating the René Carcan Fund, within the King Baudouin Foundation, with the objective of promoting the art of engraving and in particular the work of René Carcan.
René Carcan (1925-1993) was a Belgian watercolour artist and printer of renown, who created over 800 engravings. His work comprises mainly prints of dreamlike landscapes reinvented with brilliant colours.
